Avoid Conflict

Violent motoring-related incidents are rare, but it is important  to know what to do if you feel threatened by another driver:

  • Keep calm and show restraint

  • Do not compete or retaliate

  • Do not push into traffic queues

  • Acknowledge that most aggravating moves by other drivers are unintentional

  • Say sorry and thanks to other drivers

  • Try not to react and avoid making eye contact

  • Do not respond with sudden acceleration, braking or swerving

  • In urban areas, keep the doors and boot locked and the windows and sunroof only partly open

  • Never carry any kind of defensive weapon

If you think you are being followed, try to drive to a busy public place or a Garda station before you stop.
If you are on a motorway, mingle with other traffic, and do not leave the motorway for unfamiliar roads.

Should you be physically threatened, stay in the car and lock the doors. Call for help on your mobile phone, if you have one, and use the car’s horn and lights to attract attention
