First Aid

To be more confident at the scene of a road accident consider taking a course in First Aid

Dealing with injuries

Assess the situation

  • Stay calm
  • Ensure safety - control traffic and switch off car engines
  • Summon medical help as soon as possible
  • Make use of any bystanders
  • Do not give anything to eat, drink or smoke
  • Offer constant reassurance
  • Keep casualties warm while waiting for medical help
  • Do not move injured people unless they are in immediate danger. Some types of injury, such as spinal ones, can be made worse if the injured person is moved

Recovery Position

If the casualty is breathing but unconscious use the recovery position, turning the person onto his or her side, tilted slightly forward with the uppermost leg and arm bent to help prop the upper body.

Burns

Treat burns by immersing in cold water for at least 10 minutes.
Never try to remove clothing from burned skin.

Bleeding

Treat severe bleeding by applying continuous direct pressure to the bleeding point. Raise the affected limb if appropriate.
